SCAM ALERT: AMAZON

The Harrisville Police Department is warning its residents about the new trend of fraud activity involving Amazon and unauthorized high value purchases.

How it works: a new text message scam targeting our community.

1. Typical Scam Mechanics

Impersonation of Amazon Support

Scammers call, text, or email you claiming to be “Amazon Fraud Department” or “Customer Support.” They actor may use spoofed phone numbers so the caller ID looks like it’s from Amazon.

The message usually says there’s been an unauthorized purchase (often an iPhone or other expensive item) on your Amazon account that triggers anxiety to prompt action. These messages are designed to steal your money, your identity, financial information, and possibly install malware on your devices.

What to do if you receive one:

• Do not respond.

• Do not click any links.

• Do not reply to the message and do not copy and paste the link in your browser.

• Report the message to your mobile carrier by forwarding it to 7726 (SPAM).

In the event a suspicious package arrives at your home you can contact Harrisville PD or your local Police Department.
