What to Expect: Field Training Program

Joining the Harrisville City Police Department means becoming part of a team committed to professionalism, integrity, and community service. Whether you’re a new recruit fresh out of the academy or a seasoned lateral officer, our Field Training Program is designed to prepare you for success in your role as a new member of our team.

 New Recruit: 14-Week FTO Program

If you’re entering law enforcement for the first time, you’ll undergo a comprehensive 14-week Field Training Program. (Approximately 640 Hours) This program is structured to build your confidence, competence, and readiness for first day solo ready.

What to Expect:

  • Phase 1: Orientation & Observation (Weeks 1–2)
    The majority of Week 1 will be dedicated to learning department policies in the office. During this time, you will receive your equipment and participate in training for firearms, Taser, less-lethal munitions, and defensive tactics. You will also familiarize yourself with our department and local partners, including Weber Area Dispatch and other nearby agencies and resources.
  • In Week 2, you will begin working with your Primary Field Training Officer (FTO) to learn about area familiarization, radio communication, report writing, basic patrol techniques, and officer safety. You will shadow your primary FTO and start to grasp the rhythm of patrol work.
  • Phase 2: Guided Application (Weeks 3–6)
    Begin handling calls with increasing independence. Week 5 you will start with your Secondary FTO. Your FTO will provide feedback and coaching on decision-making, officer safety, and community interaction. You will be tested weekly and take quizzes to demonstrate what you have learned. Homework assignments are common throughout the FTO program.
  • Phase 3: Independent Functioning (Weeks 7–10)
    The Start of Week 7 you will switch to a 3rd FTO. You will take the lead on calls and patrol duties while your FTO evaluates your performance. Week 9-11 you will return to your Primary FTO. You’ll demonstrate proficiency in traffic stops, arrests, investigations, and de-escalation techniques, area familiarization, and all computer related programs (Spillman & UCJIS etc.)
  • Phase 4: Final Evaluation (Weeks 11–14)
    Week 11 will be plain clothes week with your Primary FTO. You will Operate as a solo officer under observation. Week 12 your FTO will be one of the Patrol Sergeants. Week 13 will be with a different Patrol Sergeant. Both Sergeants will assess your readiness as a First Day Solo Capable Officer. Week 14 will be a field Shadow week. Successful completion means you’re cleared to begin as a solo probationary police officer. (Probation is One year from the date of Hire)

Lateral Officer/Prior Law Enforcement Experience

Lateral/Experienced Officer: 8-Week FTO Program

If you’re joining us from another agency or have prior law enforcement experience, you’ll participate in an 8-week accelerated FTO Program (Approximately 320 Hours) tailored to your background. We recognize the value and experience you contribute to our department, which is why you were chosen with great enthusiasm as a lateral officer. This eight-week Field Training Officer (FTO) program is designed to evaluate your skills while providing you with an excellent opportunity for success. It will allow you to familiarize yourself with our policies, best practices, and unique culture. Additionally, you’ll have the chance to ask questions and gain insight into our community’s specific needs.

What to Expect:

  • Phase 1: Department Integration (Weeks 1–2)
    Familiarize yourself with our policies, geography, technology, and culture. You’ll ride with your FTO and begin adapting your experience to our standards. Your FTO will be a Patrol Sergeant or a seasoned patrol officer
  • Phase 2: Operational Proficiency (Weeks 3–6)
    Demonstrate your skills in patrol, investigations, and community engagement. Your FTO will focus on refining your approach to align with our expectations.
  • Phase 3: Final Evaluation (Weeks 7–8)
    Operate independently while being evaluated. Your FTO will ensure you’re ready to serve confidently and competently within our department. You should clearly demonstrate your understanding of our department’s mission statement and have a comprehensive grasp of our vision statement. Additionally, you will need to be familiar with our core values and apply them effectively.
